Well, it’s the final round of the 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series. The title is still in doubt, though Cooper Webb’s chances of wresting it from Jett Lawrence’s grasp are slim. This is your last chance to beat your friends in RMFantasyMX.com leagues, so let’s get an idea of what will happen at a likely unpredictable series finale at Rice-Eccles Stadium with our 2024 Salt Lake City Supercross fantasy picks and tips.
- Cooper Webb has to either win or be the runner-up at Salt Lake City to have a shot at winning the title. If Webb wins the SLC Main Event, then Lawrence will have to come in P17 or better to be the 2024 Supercross champion. If Webb takes P2, Lawrence secures the crown if he finishes in P20 or better. The problem for Webb is that he is on a downhill slide due to a thumb ligament injury. Webb is on a 1-3-4-5 trajectory, which does not bode well for him preventing self-elimination at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- Jett Lawrence has a firm grip on the 450SX title, so it is hard to tell what his strategy will be. Lawrence has three wins in a row coming into Salt Lake City. Lawrence needs a P17 or better to clinch the championship regardless of where Webb finishes, though it’s unlikely that Webb will finish in one of the top two positions, something Webb must do to stay in contention for the title. If Webb is circulating well off the podium, there’s no reason for Lawrence not to go for the win, and a competition-demoralizing fourth win in a row and ninth win of the season is a rookie record. The way Lawrence is riding, it’s hard to put him in any position other than the top of the podium.
- Chase Sexton will want to win in Salt Lake City, but he will likely have to settle for P2. Sexton suffered two crashes last week in Denver, which relegated him to P8. However, he had great speed when upright, so he’s my choice for runner-up at Salt Lake City. Also, Sexton is tied at 282 points with Eli Tomac for P3 in the Championship standings, so there’s ample motivation to finish on the season podium. (Update: Tomac is out for SLC with a severe thumb injury that will require surgery.)
- Look for Hunter Lawrence to join his little brother on the podium again. The Lawrence Brothers went 1-2 last week in Denver, with Hunter leading the first half of the race. However, it was clear that Jett could pass him at will, and eventually did. Although it seems unlikely that Jett will hand his brother a win, that will only be possible if Hunter is in P2. With Sexton’s speed, that’s probably not going to happen if Sexton stays on two wheels. If the Lawrence brothers are running 1-2/Jett-Hunter on the final lap, you never know what will happen. That’s why you have to tune in on Peacock!
- Jason Anderson is ending the 2024 Supercross season with a bang. He is 4-4-3-3 in the last four races. If Hunter isn’t on his game, Anderson looks good for the podium. Picking between Hunter and Anderson for P3 is a coin flip. However, Hunter will be going for his first win, and Anderson is secure in P5 for the 2024 season standings, so Hunter has more motivation, so a safe P4 it is for Anderson.
- The battle for P5 is three-way: Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac, and Cooper Webb. Tomac is tied with Sexton for P3, so he will want to beat Sexton. However, that doesn’t seem likely, and Tomac will be safe in P4 for the year. So, for Tomac, it’s either beat Sexton or bust—bust seems more likely. Webb is hurt and fading. When Webb sees the top two out of reach, he’ll likely cruise as Webb is well clear of the P3 points battle. After struggling for most of the year, Barcia is on a 5-6-4 run. Barcia is tied for P8 in the standing with Hunter Lawrence, so he has some motivation. Also, Justin Cooper is just five points ahead of the duo, so P7 for the year is within Barcia’s reach. All that points to at least a top-five effort from Barcia.
- The Wild Card is P10, with two good choices—Dylan Ferrandis and Dean Wilson. Ferrandis has two P9s since returning after missing five rounds due to injury and illness. Dean Wilson has carded three consecutive P11s coming into Salt Lake City. I don’t see an upward trend for Wilson, and Tomac isn’t likely to finish in P10 as he did last week in Denver. So, put down Ferrandis as the P10 Wild Card.
