Chase Sexton went 1-1 at the 2024 Hangtown Motocross Classic, coming from last place in the second moto’s first turn to passing Aaron Plessinger on the final lap to take the win. Jett Lawrence’s 24-moto unbeaten streak ended after he crashed spectacularly on the first moto’s opening lap. The injured Lawrence remounted and finished in P26. In the second moto, Lawrence ran as high as P2 at the midway point before fading to P6 at the checkered flag. Lawrence finished the day in P12 overall.
Sexton’s stunning comeback from last-to-first in the 17-lap second moto was a ride that will be talked about for decades. Picking his bike up in last place, Sexton moved up to P25 at the end of the first lap. After two laps, Sexton was in the top 10. Four laps in, Sexton had moved up to P8. Meanwhile, Plessinger had built up an eight-second cushion midway through the moto. However, Sexton continued his relentless charge. At the beginning of the final lap, Plessinger had a 3.4-second lead and looked like a sure winner. However, Sexton turned in a 2:02 lap compared to Plessinger’s 2:06.5 final lap, Plessinger’s slowest of the race. Sexton was faster than Plessinger every lap from lap six to the finish.
Sexton’s pass stole the overall from Plessinger, with Plessinger dropping to P3 overall with a 5-2 day. Hunter Lawrence was in P2 overall, going 2-4. Jason Anderson took P3 in the first moto, with Justin Cooper taking the last podium slot in the second moto.
Sexton moved into the 2024 AMA Pro Motocross National Championship Series lead with 90 points, eight points ahead of Hunter Lawrence. Plessinger and Cooper are tied on points in P3 with 69 points, two points ahead of Anderson in P5. Jett Lawrence slips from P1 to P6, one point behind Anderson and 24 points behind leader Sexton. Lawrence retains a 20-point lead in the 2024 SuperMotocross World Championship Series standings.
Pro Motocross racing resumes on Saturday, June 8, in Lakewood, Colorado, with the Thunder Valley National. Check out our 2024 Pro Motocross Television Schedule for viewing details.
