The break is over, and the 2024 AMA Pro Motocross National Championship Series is ready to resume. The fifth round of the 11-round series on Saturday is the Southwick National at The Wick 338 in Southwick, Mass. So, dust off your RMFantasyMX.com account, and let’s get your 2024 Southwick motocross fantasy picks in the system.
- Jett Lawrence is heavily favored to win. Jett comes in with three consecutive moto wins, and a 1-1 result last year at The Wick 338. While he might still be feeling the lingering effects of his brutal first-lap Hangtown Classic crash, it’s not stopping him from winning. The week off can only have helped the defending 450MX National Champion.
- Hunter Lawrence and Chase Sexton are locked in a close battle to see who will finish behind Jett Lawrence. Hunter won the 250MX class at the Southwick National in 2021, and as a racer with European experience, Hunter gets the nod on the Euro-style sand track at The Wick 338. So, Hunter in P2, with Chase right behind Hunter on the podium.
- If you’re considering anyone on the podium besides the Lawrence brothers and Sexton, reconsider your position. Hunter has been on the overall podium at all four rounds. Jett and Sexton have been on the overall podium at three rounds. The only other riders to crash the podium are Justin Cooper and Aaron Plessinger, and they each have just one overall podium to show for their 2024 efforts.
- Just as Hunter Lawrence, Jett Lawrence, and Chase Sexton have the podium lock, Justin Cooper and Aaron Plessinger own the rest of the top five. Cooper and Plessinger each have three overall top-fives. Justin Barcia has two, with Jason Anderson and Dylan Ferrandis poking into the overall top-five once each.
- Justin Cooper is on a stronger roll than Aaron Plessinger. Cooper has finished in front of Plessinger in five of the last six motos. That’s enough to give Cooper the nod for P4 and Plessinger the P5 slot.
- If you think Jason Anderson can put together two strong motos in one round, go ahead and consider him for the top five. Anderson has five top-five moto finishes in eight motos this year. However, he has gone 10-4 and 7-4 at the last two rounds. That inconsistency makes him a dicey proposition.
- Although it’s a home race for Justin Barcia, he hasn’t been bringing top-five finishes. Barcia has just one top-five moto finish in eight attempts this year. If you’re looking for a dark horse, Barcia is your guy, but he’s still a long shot.
- The Wild Card is P12, which means many possibilities, with two riders emerging as best picks. Grant Harlan has gone 11-12-12-14-12-14 in motos since the first round—that’s a lot of P12 finishes. Marshal Weltin is right there, going 13-13-18-12 in the last four motos. Also in the mix are Freddie Norén, Christian Craig, and Phil Nicoletti, though none of the three are compelling choices. I’m going with Harlan, and best of luck to you on this one.
- It’s an East Coast race, so left coasters will have to set their alarms early to watch all the content on Peacock.
