For the first time in the history of MV Agusta, a dirt-ready motorcycle will be rolling off the assembly line. Teased two years ago as the MV Agusta Lucky Explorer Project 9.5, the final product is ready for release as the 2024 MV Agusta LXP Orioli. A clean sheet design that owes nothing to any previous MV Agusta model, this motorcycle is designed for the luxury adventure-touring market segment. As everything is new, we have a lot of ground to cover.
- Let’s start by explaining the unusual name. “LXP” refers to Lucky Explorer. As 1990s Cagiva sponsor Lucky Strike is still an active cigarette brand, the Lucky name was shorted to “L” with “XP” an abbreviation of Explorer. “Orioli” refers to four-time Dakar Rally winner Edi Orioli. The legendary Italian rally racer has two additional Dakar podiums and a Pharaoh Rally win in 1993.
- The 2024 MV Agusta LXP Orioli has a completely new motor. Although it is MV Agusta’s signature inline-three configuration with a counterrotating crankshaft, it only shares a few odd parts with its predecessors. The 931cc displacement is a new size for MV Agusta, and the engine is only moderately oversquare. The motor is designed to be robust, with particular attention paid to the lubrication and cooling system, along with the crankshaft and cassette-style, quickshifter-equipped, six-speed gearbox. The engine weighs 126 pounds, and will be used in other future models.
- The DOHC triple is designed to crank out the torque. Although the maximum grunt of 75 ft-lbs comes at 7000 rpm, at just 3500 rpm, the torque output is already 85 percent of the maximum. Rev the engine up to 10,000 rpm, and you’ll be rewarded with 124 horsepower at the crank. The exhaust is designed to enhance torque production, and has a valve that is electronically controlled and integrated into the design—sorry, no triple-pipe exhaust outlets on the standard exhaust, but don’t despair just yet.
- There’s a full suite of IMU-informed electronic aids to assist 2024 MV Agusta LXP Orioli riders. Fully ride-by-wire, the LXP has three preset engine maps—Touring, Urban, and Off-Road—plus Custom All-Terrain. There are four levels of power delivery, eight traction control levels (five road levels, two off-road levels, and Rain), two ABS settings (plus off), two engine braking levels, launch control, wheelie control, and cruise control (disengaged with negative throttle twist). The dash is a seven-inch TFT display with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity via your Android or iOS device and the MV Ride App. The handlebar controls are backlit by LEDs for after-dark performance.
- The frame is a departure for MV Agusta—it’s not a trellis. Instead, it’s a perimeter design using steel tubing, with a bolt-on double cradle supporting the engine. The rear subframe is removable—a boon to maintenance, and it is replaceable should it be bent in a fall. The swingarm is cast aluminum. Even with the cradle design, the LXP Orioli has 9.1 inches of ground clearance. The centerstand, crash bars, and skid plate are standard. The curb weight of the chassis is an Italian state secret, though a meaningless 494-pound “dry” weight is quoted. The fuel tank holds 5.3 gallons and sports Edi Orioli’s signature.
- The 21-/18-inch wheelset flaunts the LXP’s off-pavement capability. The CNC-machined hubs are aluminum and laced to Takasago Excel tubeless rims. Off-road-ready Bridgestone Battlax Adventurecross AX41 knobbies are standard, with street-focused Bridgestone Battlax Adventure A41 tires available as an alternative. The front wheel gets a pair of 320mm discs clamped down on by radially mounted Brembo Stylema calipers. A large 265mm rear disc is grasped by a two-piston Brembo caliper. The wheelbase is 63.4 inches, with no rake number sited by MV Agusta—an odd tradition from the gente at Varese.
- Sachs handles the suspension duties. Wheel travel is 8.3 inches at both ends, with full adjustment fore and aft. The 48mm fork is an inverted design, while the shock has linkage assistance. Valving is set up for off-road performance.
- The 2024 MV Agusta LXP Orioli is touring-ready, with ergonomics designed for street and dirt operation. According to MV Agusta insiders, there’s a “calm zone” behind the windshield. Aluminum panniers with MV Agusta branding are standard, with a 39-liter capacity on the left and 32 liters on the right. The mounting system is quickly accomplished release and mounting.
- There’s a special kit included with the LXP Orioli. It consists of a street-legal Termignoni titanium triple-outlet exhaust with a carbon fiber endcap and heat shield, along with an Orioli-signature wooden box containing a trophy-style numbered certificate of authenticity and a dedicated MV Agusta bike cover.
- There will be 500 numbered examples of the 2024 MV Agusta LXP Oriolo produced. MV Agusta dealers will have the bike before Q2 of 2024. No price has been set.
